The Colne Valley Regional Park
In June 2024 our Green Team went out to tackle Himalayan Balsam in Denham Country Park. This work is part of the ‘Improvement Works Project’ lead by Buckinghamshire Council. The green teams objectives is to improve the environment as well as help local people gain valuable skills and future job opportunities through programme called Green Skills.
An ambitious new project is being led by the Colne Valley with the aim to clear the River Colne running through Denham Country Park of the invasive species Floating Pennywort.
Kabir Kaul is an inspiring young conservationist. Through writing, broadcasting, public speaking and social media, he raises awareness about the capital’s green spaces and their wildlife, which he calls the ‘Wild Side of London’ – and believes every Londoner has a responsibility to protect it. Kabir tells us about how he first discovered Colne Valley Regional Park, his favorite wildlife spots, and his concerns for the future of the park.

John Whitby is a local farmer who has lived and worked in the Colne Valley all his life, playing a leading role in preserving this unique landscape for future generations to enjoy. By necessity and training, John has been a champion of the importance of farming and farmers as a key fixture of life on the rural-urban fringe. Come join us at Denham Country Park during the Colne Valley Park Festival Fortnight, exploring rivers through story telling, river dipping, face painting and art.
If you live locally then why not take a springtime bluebell walk and visit one of the wonderful woodlands in the Park that shares this this gorgeous spectacle but be warned – they don’t last for long, typically, bluebells appear from mid-April to late May, depending on the weather.
With the tides turning on lockdown back in May, our volunteer event days had been slowly trickling back to normality. From Pennywort removals to Balsam bashing, not only were we able to pick up where we left off from last year to help keep our rivers flowing – we were finally able to open the floodgates to start our first Outfall Safari in Colne Valley on the Fray’s River – and what a success it was…
