Walking

Walking is by far the most popular countryside recreation, and is well catered for in the Colne Valley.  Facilities range from short circular walks on surfaced paths to leaflets detailing much longer countryside rambles, all of which can be obtained from the Visitor Centre.

[Back to Things to Do]

Sturdy boots and water bottles are recommended for all these walks. Some walks may involve steep inclines and stiles. Please note that dogs are not permitted on any of our walks.

For more information about the walks and events contact the Colne Valley Park Visitor Centre on 01895 833375. Parking charges may apply. Time and distances may vary on the day. Children must be accompanied by an adult on all activities.

Guided walks: Walks run by local groups with particular knowledfge and understanding of the area. Discover wildlife and plants or join one of our regular healthy walks on almost every day of the week.

Short walks: These walks vary from 1½   to 4 miles and are an easy way to start exploring the Colne Valley. The "Short Walks in the Colne Valley Park" leaflet is available from the Colne Valley Park Visitor Centre for £2.95, or the individual walks can be downloaded as PDF files.

Circular walks: These walks vary from 3 to 8 miles and are an excellent way to explore new areas of the Colne Valley. The routes have been carefully chosen and detailed colour leaflets are available individually or as a set from the Visitor Centre or they can be downloaded as PDF files.

The Colne Valley Food Trail is a leaflet with details of all the farm shops in the Colne Valley. It also details some guided walks that you can take around some of the farm shops giving you the opportunity to explore the countryside and then to visit the farm shop if you wish. You can pick up the leaflet from the farm shops featured or from the Colne Valley Park Visitor Centre. Some of the walks are described in the guide and all of them can be downloaded as PDF files:

Country Parks: There are a number of these attractive spots which are popular because of their networks of well signed, surfaced paths and picnic or play areas.

Linear Walks: Two longer linear walks are also available. The Colne Valley Trail covers the northern end of the Valley, whilst the Colne Valley Way covers the south. Both routes are well signed and detailed descriptive leaflets are available from the Visitor Centre. You can also find more information from the Long Distance Walkers Association.

Regional Routes: A number of routes pass through the Colne Valley such as the Grand Union Canal Walk from London to Birmingham, the South Bucks Way and Beeches Way, and the Hillingdon Trail.

Ramble and Ride: A set of four leaflets has been devised giving attractive routes starting and finishing at railway stations. There is also a comprehensive network of footpaths and bridleways which can be used when devising your own route.
