Colne Valley Park Volunteering

There are lots of volunteer opportunities at the Colne Valley Park if you have some spare time, want to learn new skills or share some talents of your own.  Below are the volunteer positions we have available at present.

Colne Valley Visitor Centre Volunteer Assistant

 

If you like variety and meeting people then this is the job for you.  With direction from the Visitor Centre Manager you will help operate the information centre and cafe.  This will involve serving refreshments to visitors and providing information on local walks and things to see and do.  Tasks you may be involved with would include weekly stock takes, insuring leaflet racks are full and displays are clean and tidy, answering the telephone, total shop takings at the end of the day and ensuring the cafe is clean and shleves well stocked.

Colne Valley Herb Garden Volunteer

 

Colne Valley Food is a Social Enterprise that aims to make local food more readily available, support local farmers and to raise awareness of the links between food and the landscape.  The Volunteer will work to assist Colne Valley Food by maintaining and developing the Community Herb Garden at Denham Country Park,

UB9 5PG

 

The main responsibility will be to ensure a continuous supply of fresh herbs for Colne Valley Food

 

Tasks are varied and include:

  • Propagating plants by sowing seeds, taking cuttings
  • General maintenance such as weeding beds, watering plants, cutting back.
  • Planting out Herbs as directed in the management plan
  • Harvesting and preparing herbs for Colne Valley foods
  • Producing recipe leaflets
  • Helping with events held at the garden

 

Skills Obtained:

  • Horticulture
  • Knowledge of Herb cultivation and cooking

 

Requirements:

The Garden will need a volunteer for 4-5 hours a week from March-November

As is policy with many organisations staff and volunteers working with children will need to complete a police check form.

Colne Valley Food Volunteer

 

Colne valley Food is a Social Enterprise that aims to make local food more readily available, support local farmers and to raise awareness of the links between food and the landscape.  The Volunteer will work with the Colne Valley Food Manager at Denham, UB9 5PG to assist the enterprise. Tasks are varied but could include:

  • Assisting with the development of the box scheme, research costings for equipment, produce an operations plan
  • Assisting local farmers in running the food stall on a rotation basis
  • Run (or assist with) the activities stall. Activities could include children’s colouring sheets, ‘Spudzilla’ creation competitions (create a monster using potatoes and toothpicks), planting seeds for people to take home grow and eat, encourage people to pedal the ‘smoothie bike’ to power a liquidiser and create your own fruit drink….etc
  • Assisting with on-farm events such as Open Farm Sunday and guided walks
  • Co-ordinate community sharing of recipes for local produce, incorporate selected recipes onto the website and onto the food stalls, researching new recipes for the above.
  • Helping to plan the annual Colne Valley Food Festival. This could include booking exhibitors, organising fun activities, marketing & publicity.
  • Lead fun activities at the Colne Valley Food Festival e.g. wild food guided walks….etc
  • Management and maintenance of the Colne Valley Community Herb garden
  • Maintain and update the Colne valley Food website
  • Assist with the feasibility study into a permanent base for Colne Valley food to operate from.
  • Assist with preparation of funding applications for the above.

 

Skills Obtained:

The post could help develop skills in:

  • Project development and fundraising
  • Research skills
  • Use of Publisher and Word
  • Organisation and promotion of events
  • Retail and business development

 

Requirements:

Minimum commitment of 3 months would be ideal however we are aware that circumstances may vary

Walk Leader Volunteer

 

If you enjoy walking and know which way round to hold a map this is the job for you.  we need walk leaders to take people on walks around established walk routes.  You will be provided with training and information on the surrounding landscape and be in contact with the Colne Valley Countryside Officer via a mobile phone during the course of the walk.  We already have a team of walk leaders at work who will share their experience and enthusiasm with you.  It's a great way to share a day out in the varied landscape of the Colne Valley.
