Planning in the Colne Valley Park
The Colne Valley Park is under tremendous development pressure given its location as the first part of Green Belt on London's urban edge and adjacent to Heathrow Airport. Since its formation in 1965 the Colne Valley Park has been successful in resisting urbanisation mainly due to the strength of the Green Belt Policy. However, there have been significant infrastructure developments progressed during this time including construction of the M40 and M25.
Many of the current development proposals are related to regional or national infrastructure including:
Individually, these (and other proposals) will have a significant impact on the Colne Valley Park yet the cumulative impact will be greater still.
One of the main challenges for the future is to enable positive management of the large areas of green belt land that are held for 'hope value' and left to deteriorate in the hope that development will be permitted in the future.
